ACTIVITY METHOD OF TEACHING
Minister’s Defence Of “Playway” (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 17 The activity method of teaching—the “playway”—was defended by the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) yesterday afternoon in an address to about 600 teacher trainees at Auckland Teachers’ College. ‘‘l’ve seen it in operation, and I believe it to be admirable if used as a means to an end,” he said. “The best way to awaken learning is by getting the child’s personal interest. But later you must supplement that by an imposed discipline. “The discipline need not be harsh or cruel, but there comes a time when you have to have it. You teachers are called to prepare a child for life as it is. not as you and I might'wish it, to live sheltered from pitfalls. “Therefore you must prepare him to face something lhat is difficult. He will be called on to do things in life which are positively distasteful. "Don’t send a. child into the world with a capacity to do only that which interests him.”
