Fine Record Of Surf Rescues
rphe outstanding record of reA ported rescues by the life saving clubs of this country will be of particular satisfaction to those who follow the sport. The number for the years 1911 to 1956 is 4659. This figure, gained from official records and clubs reports, represents a truly remarkable performance.
The principal means of rescue have been, reel and belt, 1330; without line 1717; surf ski 286. Apart from this, 1276 rescues were assessed from club reports from the years 1911 to 1932, when
the national association was formed. The largest number of reported rescues in any one season was 284 in 1955-56. During World War 11, when the membership of clubs was at its lowest, 46 rescues were recorded, the lowest ever. Many of these rescues were made by women, who took over a large amount of the work formerly done by men. It is a great tribute to the efficient training given by the clubs of this country that they still perform the greatest number of rescues without any aids.
