WAGE RISE FOR DOCTORS

Macmillan Grants 5 p.c. Increase LONDON, April 16.. Doctors who have been asking the British Government for a 24 per cent, cost-of-living pay rise will receive a 5 per cent, increase from May 1. The Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) announced this in the House of Commons today. Junior hospital staff recently won a 10 per cent, increase. The British Medical Association had advised 21,000 family doctors to withdraw from the National Health Service unless the Government agreed to consider its claim. The Government had referred the whole question to a Royal Commission. Today’s announcement affects consultants and specialists and includes all dentists engaged in the general dental services. General practitioners are also to have a 5 per cent rise to their pay after the deduction of practice expenses.

Mr Macmillan said the total cost of the increases—including the 10 per cent, for the junior hospital staff—totalled £6,000,000.
