U.S. ATOMIC PLANE

Schedule For Development WASHINGTON, April 16. The United States Air Force, beset by a series of technical problems, now expected to have its first atom-powered combat plane in six or seven years, the United Press reported today. After a series of stops and starts, the Air Force had set up a firm schedule for the plane, which was said to have pleased members of the Congressional Atomic Energy Committee. The Air Force Secretary (Mr Donald Quarles) has been describing the new schedule in a series of closed-door appearances before Congressional committees. Members of the Atomic Energy Committee were reported to consider that the project now had been restored to a feasible timetable; that the longer time-table for development has been partially reversed; and that management of the programme was being tightened.
