TROTTING Australian Interest In Yearling Sale
Australian buyers will operate at the thirteenth annual T»Jew Zealand national sales of standard-bred yearlings at the Addington Show Grounds-tomorrow. They will not have unrestricted funds, but their allowance is expected to be sufficient.
Among the Australian visitors will be Mr B. J. Clifton, of Forbes, New South Wales, who last year paid 1195 guineas for four youngsters, Mr J. Glide, of Melbourne, who paid £625 guineas for two yearlings, and Mr R. J. Collinson, of Melbourne, who has been a buyer at previous sales.
The catalogue has 108 yearlings. They represent 29 sires, 18 of which were bred in New Zealand, six in the United States, three in Australia and two in Italy. Johnny Globe, Local Light, Vagus, Van Dieman and Young Grattan will be represented at the sales for the first time. The American-bred stallion, U. Scott, with 14 yearlings, has the the greatest representation at the sales. Smokey Hanover is next with 13. Light Brigade will be represented by 11, Van Dieman eight, Young Bob seven, and Sandydale, King Scott and Lucky Hanover five.
Yendarra Stud, Otahuhu, will offer 10 yearlings. Roydon Lodge Stud, Ltd., Yaldhurst, will have seven, and Mr A. Holmes, Yaldhurst, and Mr J. M. Connelly, Orari, will have five.
Much will depend on the interest shown by Australian buyers on how this year’s average price will compare with that of last year, when 54 lots were sold for 15,470 guineas, an average of 286 J guineas. It is expected that the figures this year will be higher. Previous Averages I In 1955 the record average of 354 J guineas was obtained, 67 lots being sold for 23,670 guineas. The previous year the average was 3441 guineas. Last year Australian buyers took 17 yearlings for 5350 guineas, an average of 3141 guineas. In 1955 they dominated the sales, taking 42 lots for 15,615 guineas, an average of 3711 guineas. In 1954 they took 31 of the 43 lots sold at an average of 4361 guineas. In 1953 they took 14 lots at an average price of 530 guineas. Last year the top price was 950 guineas for a colt by Medoro from Sunny Corner, offered on behalf of Mr W. A. Gardiner, of Oamaru. He was purchased by Mr R. Fidler, of Melbourne. A half-sister by Fourth Brigade to this youngster will be offered tomorrow. Last year Roydon Lodge Stud. Ltd., received *950 guineas for a colt by U. Scott from Airflow, but this price „was gained privately after he had been passed in at auction. Top price for a filly last season was 550 guineas for a youngster by Light Brigade from Admiration, offered on behalf of Mr G. Aitchison, of Oamaru. Mr Aitchison will offer a halfbrother by Lucky Hanover to this filly tomorrow. Highest Price Highest price among the 68 colts and geldings and 40 fillies to be offered tomorrow is expected to be realised by the Local Light —Blue Revue colt, which paced one mile in the world record time of 2min 9 l-ssec on the first day of the current Addington Easter meeting. This youngster is expected to meet a keen inquiry from New Zealand and Australian buyers. It is also possible that there will be further overseas interest. Other youngsters expected to meet with keen inquiry include a colt by U. Scott from Spring Fancy, a sister to General Scott .(leading two-year-old in New South Wales last season), a brother to Lord Windermere (winner of the Sydney Sapling Stakes), a sister to Super Brigade, a half-sister by Lucky Hanover to Explicit, a brother to Nick Scott, a half-brother by Morano to Distant Star, a half-sister by Van Dieman to Local Gold, a half brother by Medoro to Pardon Me, a sister to Scotch Girl,. a halfsister by Light Brigade to Highland Flame and Alight, and a half-brother by U. Scott to Worthy Gold.
There will be a parade of yearlings at the Show Ground * this afternoon and it is expected that most of the youngsters will be produced. The sales will end on Thursday when brood mares, two and three-year-olds. and racing stock will be offered. Useful Effort
Lady Baffelan came in for confident support in the Reta Peter Handicap at Addington on Saturday, She was backed down to 3, 4 favouritism. She was always handily placed and she finished on solidly to be fifth, less than two lengths from the winner, Barravey. The Baffelan mare is in great order at present and, although her opportunities for the rest of the season will be extremely limited, she should soon win.
At Templeton Showdown had his first start since joining D. G. Jones’s Templeton team when he finished fourth in the Plains Handicap at Addington. He lost ground at the start, but was not as far back as usual at the end of a furlong. He showed speed to come from tenth with half a mile to run, to be fourth turning for home. He did not improve his position, but held on for a fair fourth. Showdown should soon win for his new trainer.
Melbourne Trotting A report from Melbourne says that the Victorian Government is alarmed at the desperate financial position of the Victorian Trotting Control Board. It is claimed that the board has had an unrealistic approach to financial matters. The board has agreed to pay two-thirds of the £315,000 involved in the construction of a luxurious grandstand. It is expected that the board’s interest bill on the amount involved will be about £12,500 a year. Although the board has committed itself to the amounts mentioned it has no equity in the Melbourne Showgrounds. All the board owns is office furniture and some vehicles. Rental of the ground is £570 for each night’s racing. Answer to Correspoftdent “Interested,” Christchurch.— Lookaway won over two miles at Greymouth in October. That was his first win.
