An unusually large crowd enjoyed many close races. AU the competing clubs suffered from the absence of members who play football, but in spite of the lateness of the re- ? a , a in the season a remarkably nigh standard of oarsmanship was seen.
Canterbury won the senior fours, the main event on the programme, with a seasoned combination—P. J. R. Spooner, W. K. Jones, E. R. McCalman, and C. J. Sewell. The other senior event, the double sculls, went to the experienced James brothers, of the Avon club. .The Canterbury representative eight gave a demonstration row during the afternoon. Results were:— Light-weight Maiden Double Sculls. —First heat: Avon 1. Cure 2, Timaru 3. Final: Avon 1, Cure 2. Youths’ Four-oar.—First heat: Timaru No. 1 1, Union No 22. Second heat: Canterbury No. 1 1, Avon 2. Final: Canterbury 1, Avon 2. Three-quarters of a length. Novice Double Sculls.—First heat: Union No. 1 1. Second heat: Avon No. 21, Cure No. 22. Third heat: Cure No. 1 1. Timaru 2. Final: Avon 1, Cure 2. Three lengths. Junior Four-oar.—First heat: Canterbury No. 21, Timaru 2. Second heat: Avon 1, Canterbury No. 1 2. Final: Avon 1, Canterbury No. 22 Two-thirds of a length. F. D. Kesteven Memorial Cup (Youths’ Double Sculls). —First heat: Canterbury 1, Union No. 1 2. Second heat: Cure 1, Timaru 2.
