TROTTING ELECTRIC STAKES TO FALSE STEP

Another Easy Win For Lookaway

Young horses took the honours on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Addington on Saturday. False Step, a four-vear-old, won the Electric Stakes, and Lookaway and Dignus, both of which are three-year-olds, won the doubles races. The performances of all three were of a high standard.

False Step avenged his defeat by Tactician in the Rattray Stakes on the first day of the meeting by outstaying him in a fine finish to the Electric Stakes. False Step now joins the select list of four-year-olds which have won a free-for-all. Johnny Globe is the only horse of that age to have •won a free-for-all in recent years.

False Step was on the outside ef Tactician, just behind the pacemaker, General Sandy, in the middle stages of Saturday’s race. He took the measure of General Sandy just after passing the threefurlong post. Tactician appeared to head him about half a furlong cut, but the four-year-old came again and won most decisively. False Step is raced by Mr J. Smyth, of West Melton, for whom he is trained and driven by J. D. Latten. The same combination won the Reta Peter Handicap with Barravey. and Litten trained and drove Dignus to win his second race at the meeting in the second leg of the double, the Plains Handicap. The first leg, the Williams Handicap, was won easily by Lookaway. He lost about 30 yards at the start, but raced into the lead with four and a half furlongs to run. He did not look like being tested and won easing up by nine lengths.

Raced by Mr C. L. Rhodes, he is trained by M. Holmes, who also drove Alight and Golden Chimes to win on Saturday. Lookaway is now on a 4min 27sec mark for twa miles and is eligible for the £2OOO Easter Cup next Saturday. Lookaway has now had 18 starts for eight wins and seven placings worth £4236 ss. He is now the top-ranked three-year-old of the season and should reach cup company early next season. The Lookaway-Dignus doubles combination returned £6 4s 6d for £l. The meeting was held in fine, but overcast weather, before a good attendance. The track was in first-class order, Totalisator investments •mounted to £91,728 10s. including £8704 on the double, compared with £93,889 last year. Electric Stakes Excelsa, Black Douglas, Danniel’s Pride, Brahman and Merval gave ground at the start of the Electric Stakes. General Sandy led out from Tactician, Roy Grattan, False Step, Super Royal, Te Koi, Scottish Brigade, Merval, Erahman and Excelsa. There was little change in the order in the middle stages of the race. False Step moved up to General Sandy with three furlongs to run. Tactician being handily placed just behind them. General Sandy •bowed little fight and False Step was shading Tactician, Te Koi and Brahman turning for home, with General Sandy, Merval and Super Royal next. Tactician and False Step drew clear inside the furlong, Tactician appearing to shade his rival half a furlong out False Step fought back again over the last 30 yards and gained the decision by a long neck.

Brahman, after being well back early, did well to take third place, a length in front of Excelsa, with Super Royal right up, just ahead of Danniel’s Pride and Te Koi, with a gap to Merval and another to General Sandy and Roy Grattan. William* Handicap Lookaway gained the easiest of wins in the Williams Handicap after leading over the final four and a half furlongs. There was considerable jostling in the middle stages cf the race after a fast first mile in 2min 10 4-ssec. Midday took the lead before the end of half a mile, with Glint rushing round the field to assume control with nine and a half furlongs left Lookaway joined Glint when the field began to pack up with seven furlongs to run and he worked clear of Ricochet with four and a half furlongs left Lookaway put a break on the field near the two-furlong post ana turned for home four lengths in front of Ricochet with Derive, Cembala, Lady Belmer, Don Hall, Invicta and Dresden Lady handy. Lookaway did not look likely to be beaten and won easing up by nine lengths. Marshall Foi, which lost his position in the middle stages of the race, finished very fast for second, a length in front of Dresden Lady, which also drifted after passing the seven-furlong post. Derive did not run on as well as expected and was a length back fourth, ahead of Cembala, Don Hall, Invicta, Ricochet. Lady Belmer, La Mignon and Starbeam. Invicta stood on the mark and Lookaway, La Mignon and Tui Scott broke. Barravey Holds On Barravey, after being handily placed all the way, finished on boldly to win the Reta Peter Handicap. Kevin was first out, but Quite Contrary moved clear before the end of three furlongs. Barravey and Kevin were together behind Quite Contrary at the mile post, with this trio heading the field racing to the straight. At this stage Lady Baffeian. Cabra, Lenvin, Prestbury, Scotch Paree and Recruit were all handy. Barravey soon shook off Kevin and then took the measure of Quite Contrary. He finished strongly and won well by a length. Quite Contrary raced right up to her first-day form by taking second place, a nose in front of the backmarker, Recruit, which trotted a grand race for third. Lenvin, which had trouble getting dear in the straight, was a

neck back fourth, with a similar distance to Lady Beffelan. Superfortress was a length away sixth, followed by Red Valley, Battle Cry, which did not get a run in the straight, Cabra, which was forced very wide, and Scotch Paree.
