Hydatids
Sir. —Federated Farmers, Invercargill, are reported to be concerned about the high incidence of hydatids in stock passing through freezing works. According to Thursday’s issue, quite a number of competition cattle have commercially useless livers. The danger to our children is very real. The losses to the individual "armer and the nation are being revealed. What are we doing about it? For years the veterinary side of the Department of Agriculture has been explaining to farmers individually and collectively how to proceed towards eliminating this disease. To all stockowners I say that now is the time. They are prosperous and can afford the measures that are needed to free stock from this disease. How? Dose your dogs: feed them on meat-meal biscuits, or boil the dog-tucker meat. An electric boiler unit will do the job and power is available today on most properties. Burn or bury the carcases of sheep that have died. The above measures will eliminate this disease and increase the value of by-products.—Yours, etc., THE PLAINSMAN. April 12, 1957.
