FREIGHT RATES ON COAST

Mr Shand Gives

Comparisons

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON April 12.

The Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. P. Shand) tonight explained his claim that it would cost more to ship salt from Grassmere to Bluff than from England to New Zealand. His figures were taken from a recent Board of Trade report and he had since confirmed that these were from “reliable sources.” “The shipping freight from Picton to Auckland or Picton to Bluff, is quoted at £5 a ton,” said Mr Shand. “The price for transporting tanning salt from England, which is a comparable article with that supplied from Grassmere, is quoted at £5 15s, and the price for* other salt, excluding tanning salt, at £6 10s. "I originally quoted the cost of transporting salt from. Grassmere to Bluff, which included £1 15s 3d railage and wharfage, making a total of £6 15s 3d.” said Mr Shand.
