303 Had Incomes Of More Than £l0,000 In 1953-54

WELLINGTON, April 12.
Assessable incomes of more than £ 10,000 were recorded by 303 persons in New Zealand in the income year 1953-54, says a report on the income and income-tax statistics published by the Department of Statistics. The figures contained in the report are the most recent ? vailable.
Of the 303 in the £lO,OO or more bracket, six had incomes greater than £40,000. Thirty-one of them
The report shows that of persons engaged in industry—not •wage-earners, or persons with incomes from investments —sheepfarmers were best off. Assessable incomes of more than £4OOO were recorded by 2946 of them. Only
169 doctors and 134 lawyers were in this class.
Of 535,600 persons earning wages, or with incomes from investments, only 478 were in the £4OOO or mon bracket. There were no professional workers — engineers, professors, lawyers, doctors or religious workers —in that class and there were only 30 professional men out of a total of 34,810 in the class £3OOO to £3999. Managers, administrators and officials earning salaries did better. A total of 291 earned more than £4OOO. and 163 of these were in wholesale or retail trades. There were 24,940 persons in the group. Of 84,880 clerical workers, none had incomes assessable at more than £1599, and only 260 were in the bracket £l4OO to £1599.
