UNITED STATES MEAT IMPORTS
For 1956 the United States imported more than 78,000 tons of prepared meats. Of these ham and preserved pork comprised the biggest items, with canned corned beef the next largest group and the balance made up of miscellaneous meats. Argentina was the big supplier of canned beef, and Holland, Poland, and Denmark were the major suppliers of ham. On a reasonable basis of converting prepared meats to a carcase equivalent, the above imports represent no fewer than 140,000 tons of carcase meats.
