Welcome Change In Swimming Carnivals

VEW regulations for earnival events which have been decided upon by the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association will be welcomed by swimming enthusiasts throughout the province. The elimination of handicapping from all events except the 440 yards freestyle will mean a welcome end to large numbers of swimmers . being disqualified for breaking their declared handicap times.

During the season just ended, the number of swimmers wbo were swimming considerably

faster than their declared times became most embarrassing to officials. At some inter-club carnivals, it is recorded that all competitors in certain events were disqualified. Another welcome result of the decision to make the events from

scratch will be smoother running of the programmes. Because of the increased number of competitive swimmers last season, the centre decided, after one carnival had dragged on until 6.30 p.m., that some * events should be dropped from the programme. It was also decided that events should be run in sections, and that no finals be held. The intercluti carnivals were continued throughout the remainder of the season on that basis, with a large measure of success. Handicapping was still employed within the individual sections, however, and that still tended to slow up proceedings.
