NEW HOTEL OPENS AT LYTTELTON

Replacement For One Burnt In 1942

Replacing the old wooden building which, was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve, 1942, the new Lyttelton Hotel was opened for business yesterday. The hotel has ample bar space, has sever single and three double rooms for guests. The two-storey fireproof building is of brick and concrete with wood floors laid on concrete.

The old hotel was nearly 90 years old. It was destroyed in 20 minutes in the fire that started in the grain and seed store of A. Rhind and Company on the opposite side of Norwich quay. A fierce- southerly gale was blowing at the time and pieces of burning sacks were blown as far as the top roads of Lyttelton. Three shops were also destroyed. Firemen, police and Army personnel were sent from Christchurch to help fight the fire.
