Health And The Mind

Sir, —Chasing out the jitterbugs, as M. G. Davies prescribes, cannot cure illness. Take the jitters, modern slang for fear, away from man and he will more rapidly become extinct. The jitters have thoughtfully been supplied by whomever or whatever built us. We were built to a good plan to withstand, like a good building, natural stress. But through his own efforts man, in conquering some of nature’s frontiers, has set up unnatural stresses. Now these are toppling his body. Straining to suppress the warning bells of jitters, only creates more stress against a

crumbling edifice. The only hope is evolution, this century’s generations being the unfortunate guinea-pigs. With the help of the jitters, more resilient mucous membrane, nerve pulp, and tougher hide, may evolve. Pure Christianity, while beautiful and admirable, because of its enervating effect, has failed, if indeed its functon ever was the cure of bodies and minds.—Yours, etc., MORTAL COIL. April 12, 1957.
