SCHOOL HOLIDAY CHANGES
Householders To Be Consulted
An emphatic denial that many school committees had already given their views on changing the school holidays, as alleged by the president of the Banks Avenue School Parent-Teacher Association (Mr D. A. Mason) » was given last evening by the president of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association (Mr R. W. Taylor).
The Canterbury Education Board had suggested that this issue be referred to householders’ biennial meetings at all schools next Monday evening, Mr Taylor said, and although some committees might have discussed the matter they all intended to hold public discussion. Replies to the board did not have to be in until April 22 so it was clear that the board wanted the widest possible consultations.
It would be a pity, said Mr Taylor, if parents stayed away from these meetings because they thought official opinions had already been given, as suggested by Mr Mason. There was another objection to present committees giving their views. Many of them might change next Monday and it would be best that the incoming committees should reply to the board on the basis of consultations with householders.
