SUPPORT FOR MINISTER

Southland Motor Traders

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 11.

The Southland branch of the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association today supported Mr Shand in his criticism of New Zealand coastal shipping. After a special meeting held this morning, the branch sent Mr Shand a telegram congratulating him on his statement that coastal shipping had reached the stage •where it was about the most inefficient in the world. The telegram said that the distribution of essential commodities was being seriously impeded, and this was adding tremendously to the costs of Southland consumers. Mr Shand was also told his statement was timely, and that he could be assured of the fullest support.

The distribution of motorvehicles was delayed by lack of an adequate shipping service and the poor coastal service to Bluff, branch members said at the meeting. They were forced to use other South Island ports to land vehicles. The result was that they had to bring cars and trucks overland to Invercargill from places as far distant as Nelson and the West Coast.

One major Southland distributor said that in recent months only 14 per cent, of his vehicles had been landed at Bluff. It was costing Southland distributors thousands to bring vehicles long distances overland to the province. Also, the Bluff Harbour Board was losing revenue, and the Bluff waterside workers were losing employment that w’as rightfully theirs.

It was also said that recently more than 200 vehicles were in Wellington awaiting shipment to the South Island.
