ART EDUCATION IN N.Z.
Important To Learn “To Look”
(New Zealand Press Association) ~ WELLINGTON, April 10. A difficulty for museums and art galleries in New Zealand was the lack of interest by local bodies and the Government, said the director of the Auckland Art Gallery (Mr P. A. Tomory) when he opened the Art Galleries’ and Museums’ Association conference.
Mr Tomory said the standards of museums here were as good as those of Europe, but art gallery collections on the whole were not very good. Staff were few and finance appalling, despite improvement over recent years. Mr Tomory criticised the educational practice of teaching children to paint rather than teaching them to look at pictures. Children should not be taken to a gallery to paint but to look, he said.
