Inter-School Rowing

The inter-secondary school rowing regatta last Saturday, showed an encouraging improvement on previous contests. Although the Christ’s College crew was again successful, it was apparent that the other schools are quickly bridging the gap. Rowing has been an established sport at Christ’s College for many years, but the other schools are now making rapid progress, since being “adopted” by the rowing clubs of the city.

The Boys’ High School No. 2 four was possibly the best crew of the day, and is a great credit to its coach, Mr Bedford. This crew, winning the second fours’ race, returned a better time than the Chrst’s College No. 1 crew in winning the main race. In the second race, the St. Andrew’s College crew was unfortunate in catching the weed in the river. The lessexperienced St Bede’s College and Xavier College crews did well also.

The all-round improvement in the standard of boys’ rowing is a very good thing for the future of the sport in the province. The inter-school eights in November will be awaited with great interest
