LAKE ELLESMERE RECLAMATION
Preliminary Report
On Scheme
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 10.
A preliminary report on the reclamation of an area of 5900 acres of the lake bed of Lake Ellesmere has been submitted to the Minister of Lands (Mr E. B. Corbett) by an inter-departmental committee on land irrigation. Mr Corbett said today it was intended to discuss the proposals with the North Canterbury Catchment Board before the scheme was started.
Of the area involved 4100 acres is unalienated Crown land, and 1800 acres is held on a lease in perpetuity.
Should the scheme proceed it would in the first place be treated as a new irrigation proposal, and a subsidy would be sought on the estimated cost of reclaiming the land of £190,500. The land development costs subsequent to reclamation were estimated at £285,000, which the Crown would seek to recoup by retaining and farming the area for some time after full production was reached, said Mr Corbett. It was estimated that the 5900 acres would yield 45 new dairy units or 22 sheep units, and the value of the ultimate annual production, using 1956 prices, would Oe £ 101,000 under sheets farming or £117,000 under dairy farming.
