PILOTS TO STRIKE
Pay Increases Demanded
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 10. More than 200 pilots of Qantas Empire Airways are due to strike at midnight tomorrow. Services to Britain and the United States are among those which would be halted.
The pilots are demanding pay increases that they say would bring their salaries in line with overseas rates.
The manager of the Air Pilots’ Association of Australia, Mr Bruce Crofts, said today that the strike would be initially for a week, but the pilots were determined to continue it until salary demands were met.
From midnight tomorrow, Qantas pilots would refuse to fly out of London, San Francisco, Sydney and Lae, New Guinea, he said. Aircraft on journeys would complete them. Mr Crofts said his association had been in touch with the International Association, and it would prevent other overseas airlines from extending their services.
