MAN AND WIFE KILLED
Baby Dies Soon After Birth (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 10. A young man was killed and his wife was fatally injured when they were struck from behind by a car travelling along a narrow road at Te Atatu, Henderson, this evening.
They were: Donald Hempstead, aged 21, a motor-body builder, of Te Atatu. Janet Hempstead, aged 18. Before she died, Mrs Hempstead, who suffered a fractured skull and other head injuries, was delivered of a child by a Caesarean operation at the casualty department of the Auckland Public Hospital, but the baby died threequarters of an hour after it was born.
FOUR STRUCK BY CAR Four-Year-01d Boy Seriously 111 (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. April 10. A mother and her three young children were taken to hospital after they had been knocked over by a car near Hawera about 5.15 p.m. today. A four-year-old boy was seriously injured, and had not regained consciousness five hours later. The boy, David Sklenars. of South road, Hawera. suffered head injuries. The others injured are Mrs E. K. Sklenars, aged 33; her son,Kevin, aged 2J; and her daughter, Kathleen, aged 10 months. They suffered cuts, lacerations, and shock, but their condition tonight was reported to be satisfactory.
Mrs Sklenars was wheeling her daughter in a pram along the side of the road between Hawera and Manaia towards Manaia about 200 yards from the borough boundary. The boys were walking beside her. They were hit by a car that came from behind.
CAR HITS POLE
Driver Seriously Injured
A motorist suffered severe head injuries when the late model light car he was driving struck a power pole in Riccarton road near Division street about 5.15 a.m. yesterday. He is Lyle Albert Watson, of 20A Gordon avenue. St. Albans, a representative of the Northern Building Society. Mr Watson was taken by a St. John ambulance to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where he is on the seriously ill list. Mr Watson was travelling along Riccarton road towards the city when his car swerved to the wrong side of the road and struck the pole. A passing motorist saw the accident, but it is not known what caused Mr Watson’s car to swerve.
The car was badly damaged. The top of the bonnet was flattened against the shattered windscreen and the broken steering wheel was thrust through the windscreen. One wheel was twisted badly and the other was wrenched off. with the hub driven inwards and to the rear.
