STATE-BUILT FLATS

Good Progress At “Holly Lea”

Builders have given way to painters and paperhangers at the State-built flats in Manchester street on the “Holly Lea” property, and their work will be completed shortly. Built under the Government’s flats-for-sale scheme, each of the two buildings has three flats. In each building there are two three-bedroom flats and one with two bedrooms.

In planning the flats, the Housing Division of the Ministry of Works has managed to retain many of the trees which were a feature of the old “Holly Lea” grounds, and in front of the two buildings there is plenty of room for gardens. The timber buildings, sheathed with weathboards and painted in contemporary colours, are of modern design. Glass plays a big part in the design, and separating the kitchen-dinettes from the lounges are walls mostly of glass. Each flat has two storeys, the kitchen-dinette and lounge being downstairs, and bathroom, separate toilet and bedrooms upstairs.

A drive between the two buildings leads to a carport with space for six cars. When the scheme for their sale was announced last year there were many inquiries, but, as far as is known, there have been few firm applications for purchase of the flats.
