ROCK ’n’ ROLL OPPOSED
No Inclusion In Com petitions
(New Zealand Press Assoctation) WANGANUI. April 9. Opinion was divided at a meeting of the executive committee of the Wanganui Competitions Society last night on a suggestion that rock ’n’ roll classes be included in the society’s syllabus for the annual festival in September. Those in support of the proposal said that rock ’n* roll, properly danced, was very much worthwhile. Much of what was supposed to be rock ’n’ roll was an abuse of it Dancing teachers were teaching the dance in many parts of New Zealand and if the society included it in its syllabus, the proper steps would be defined. "It should be a proper test, open to teenagers,” said the supporters of a motion that rock ’n’ roll be recognised in the syllabus. Those in opposition argued that the dance was, as yet, not properly understood in New Zealand, and that the dancing judges on the panel would find it hard to determine a standard on which to judge it Voting on the proposal was five in favour five against. The president (Mr D. G. Strachan) gave his casting vote to let matters stand as they are, and not include the new dance in the syllabus.
