About 80 members and guests were received by Mr G. W. A. Green, president of the Christchurch branch of the Nelson College Old Boys’ Association, and Mrs Green, assisted by Mrs H. G. Holmes, president of the Christchurch branch of the Nelson College Old Girls’ Association, and Mr Holmes, at a cocktail party held in the National Party rooms last evening. Representing kindred old pupils’ associations were Mr D. T. Ager (St. Andrew’s College) and Mrs Ager, Mr T. W. C. Tothill (Christ’s College) and Mrs Tothill, Mr and Mrs C. F. Hart (Rangi-ruru), Miss M. P. Best and Miss L. A. Bunt (St. Margaret’s College), Miss R. Loader and Mrs E. Nicholls (Avonside Girls’ High School), Miss I. F. Milnes and Miss O. L. Eslick (Christchurch Girls’ High School). Mr J. A. Whitcombe (Waitaki Boys’ High School) and Mrs Whitcombe. Guests of honour were Mrs E. Rothenberg, Mr and Mrs J. Roy Smith, and Mrs F. Andrews.

Mrs J. Roy Smith presided at a meeting of the Fendalton Garden Club, held at the home of Mrs D. Orchard, Kotare street. The guest speaker was Mr M. J. Barnett, who spoke on “Shrubs for Small Gardens.” Results of competitions were:—Flower of the month, class A: Mrs E. Somers 1, Mrs L. Mitchell 2, Mrs R. K. Holdgate 3 Class B: Mrs J. S Patterson 1, Mrs S. L. Partridge 2. Best bloom, class A: Mrs E. Somers 1, Mrs W. L. Partridge 2, Mrs R. W. Jacks 3. Class B: Mrs P. B. Watts 1, Mrs A. C. Fairburn 2, Mrs H. Dowling 3. Decorative. class A: Mrs K. Mabin 1, Mrs D. Orchard 2. Class B: Mrs W. L. Partridge 1, Mrs R. W. Jack 2, Mrs P. B. Watts 3. Shrub: Mrs C. E. Evans 1, Mrs W. J. Hudson 2, Mrs P. B. Watts 3. Mrs H. Sturge presided at the April meeting of the Spreydon sub-centre of the Red Cross Society when wool was distributed for knitting, and members were asked to make monetary contributions towards a grocery parcel to be raffled for the Red Cross building fund. The annual meeting of the Harewood branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held recently, when Mrs Hutton presided over a good attendance of members. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs Sharp; vice-presidents, Mesdames Hutton and Montgomery; secretary, Mrs Orchard; treasurer, Mrs E. King; committee, Mesdames J. King, E. Richards, F. Nicholls, Evans and Roseveare.

Mrs R. L. Sparrow presided at a meeting of the Papanui Garden Club when the guest speaker, Mrs D. G. McLachlan, of Culverden, gave a demonstration of ways of preserving flowers and leaves and showed attractive arrangements. The results of a competition for flowers and leaves arranged to represent metals were: class A, Mrs K. S. Nicholls 1. Mrs L. Somer 2, Mrs E. M. Anderson 3; class B, Mrs D. C. Bennie 1, Mrs E. R. Wiseman 2. Mrs C. R. Blackett and Miss I. Webb (equal) 3; class C, Mrs D. J. Paterson 1, Mrs P. A. Fear 2, Mrs C. Selby 3; best large bloom, Miss I. Webb 1; small, Mrs C. Blackett; flower of the month (chrysanthemum), Mrs A. McGill. A bring and buy stall realised £5 for the Horticultural Society’s building fund. The Linwood choir gave items at the tenth birthday party of the Linwood Townswomen’s Guild. Drama items were also given by the guests, Mrs Plumridge and Mrs Collett, and members of the Brighton Guild. Mrs Lamont presided.

The sanctity of marriage was the subject of an address given to the St. Albans League of Mothers at their monthly meeting by the Rev. L. V. Willing. Items were given by the league choir. Mrs W. Harvey presided.

The guest speaker at the April meeting of the Federation of Congregational Women was Mrs G. Samson, who addressed the meeting on jury service for women. Members contributed a quantity of sweets for friendless Mental Hospital patients. Mrs Hetherington presided.
