CONVENIENCES IN SUBURBS
Review By City Council
A review of shopping centres and the need for public conveniences at them has been undertaken by the works committee of the City Council, and there are 13 centres which have more than 30 shops. Generally speaking, the committee reported to the council the centres were badly served with conveniences. Four had none anywhere close. Another four had men’s conveniences some distance from the area., but no conveniences for women. Two had conveniences some distance away and another two had men’s conveniences close to the centre but no women’s conveniences.
The cost of providing conveniences was fairly high, the committee said. The cost to a reasonably high standard would be about £BOO in addition to the cost of the land.
With the exception of the Sydenham rest rooms, none of the existing conveniences was in any way modern—even to the extent of having a wash-hand basin, the
committee said. Many were in bad order. Before considering the erection of new conveniences, the council agreed that existing ones should be renovated.
