TROTTING Cabra And Gentry In Outstanding Trials
Outstanding trials by Cabra and Gentry were the highlights of training at Addington yesterday morning. Other smart trials were those. of Golden Hero and Gay Cobra. Conditions were again ideal. Most of the work was done about 10 feet out from the rails.
Cabra was trotting easily alongside the pacemaker, Quick Silver, at the end of two miles in 4min 29sec, the last half-mile in Imin 6sec, and the last quarter in 32 3-ssec. Cabra, looking improved as a result of his race in the Steward’s Handicap, is expected to make a bold showing in the Reta Peter Handicap on Saturday. Quick Silver did not trot as evenly as Cabra, but her trial was still a sound one. She did not race on the first day of the meeting, but looks well placed on 24 yards on Saturday. Gentry did not have to do his best to be shading Gay Alabama and Tonga at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 19 l-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 5 3-ssec, and the last quarter in 31 3-ssec. Gentry seems to have regained the good form he showed when he won the Riccarton Stakes at Addington in November. The Dillon Hall youngster has developed a lot since then and he looks a
bright prospect for the New Zealand Pacing Stakes on Saturday. Battle Cry made the pace and was trotting easily in front of Cembala, with a length to Fourth Edition, which was followed by Buren and Lady Attack, at the end of two miles in 4min 35 3-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 9 l-ssec, and the last quarter in 33 3-ssec. Battle Cry looks to have taken no harm from his winning run last Saturday and he will be a strong contender for the Reta Peter Handicap in spite of his handicap of 60 yards. Lady Attack and Fourth Edition, candidates for the New Zealand Pacing Stakes, also worked well. Golden Hero’s Trial Golden Hero, which is to resume racing in the Pacing Stakes after having been off the scene since last December, was most impressive in his trial over one mile and a half in company with Highland Air. Both horses were pacing easily after recording 3min 21 2-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 3sec. They sprinted the final two furlongs in the good time of 29 4-ssec. Golden Hero looks well forward for Saturday’s engagement and he should be prominent. Lauder Lady and Bronze Indian went easily over one mile and a half in 3min 24sec, the last halfmile in Imin 4sec, and the last quarter in 32sec. Lauder Lady worked . kindly throughout and looks ready to improve on her second to Lookaway last Saturday. Bronze Indian looks fit. Unfortunately, he has been eliminated from his races on the first two days of the meeting. He will probably get a start on the final day. Gay Cobra went on his own over one mile and a half in 3min 21sec, the last half-mile in Imin 1 2-ssec, and the last quarter in 31 l-ssec. Gay Cobra was a good fifth in the Rothschild Handicap last week and he may do better in the Plains Handicap this week. Easy Two Miles See All made the pace and was shading Nadjehda and Dale Forest at the end of an easy two miles in 4min 40 4-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 4 4-ssec, and the last quarter in 31 4-ssec. See AU looks a fit horse and appears to have taken no harm from his
race in the Spreydon Handicap last week. He will race next on the third day of the meeting when he should go close to avenging his defeat by Durban Chief last week.
Ebony Scott and Nam Jung were ahead of Estelle at the end of a very easy two miles in smin 7 2-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 8 2-ssec, and the last quarter in 33sec. Estelle, a candidate for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, was not hurried and did not look like making a mistake. She should be placed on Saturday.
Rockn Roll, also a candidate for the Trotting Stakes, was given an easy run over one mile and a half. She sprinted her last halfmile in Imin 6 3-ssec, and her last quarter in 32 4-ssec. Judear recorded 2min 47sec for her mile and a quarter. She worked in company with Shiner and Dalmation, trotting her final half-mile in Imin ssec. Judear is to race at Greymouth on April 22, when she will be driven by M. Holmes. Sound Effort
Don Hall made a bold showing for nine furlongs in the Bryndwr Handicap .at Addington on Saturday when he had his first start since January of last year. Don Hall caused trouble before the start and was sent to the outside. He was one of the best to begin and took the lead at the end of two furlongs. He set a strong pace and was still in front reaching the straight. His condition then gave out and he was not knocked about to finish seventh. Don Hall is certain to have benefited from the race and he should show to advantage before the meeting ends.
Took No Part Midday stood on the mark at the start of the Rothschild Handicap at Addington on Saturday and took no serious part in the race. The Gold Bar pacer looked to have done plenty of work and the first time he is reasonably placed in the handicaps he may return to the outstanding form he showed two seasons ago.
