RACING Sarcelle Shows Her Speed At Riccarton

Sarcelle showed she had made pleasing progress since her win at Trentham last month when she sprinted a fast half mile at Riccarton yesterday.

By arrangement she galloped on the course proper. Though W. Beck kept her wide all the way she recorded 50 2-ssec, and finished her task with speed in reserve.

Sarcelle may be the South Island’s best two-year-old in the Champagne Stakes at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting.

Most of the work yesterday was done on the inside of the trial grass, a track that usually puts fast times within reach of even the moderate performers. Fulgent <N. Hoy) dashed home from the half mile in 48 l-ssec, and appeared to do his work well. He has 8-6 in the Great Easter Handicap, and has earned a start with some sound efforts for Mrs C. C. McCarthy. Melinda Jane, also ridden by Hoy, recorded 48 3-ssec for her half mile later in the morning. She is another Great Easter Handicap candidate, and has regularly sprinted well in training, but her race form has not been of a good standard. Bagatelle (C. McDonald) could have bettered her 52 l-ssec. Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) took 52 4-ssec, and also could have done better. Fresh Start

The stablemates. Shame (J. W. McDonald) and Nehru (D. J. Thistoll), sprinted half a mile on terms in 52sec. Nehru has not raced since the New Zealand Cup meeting, where he was once placed in two starts. He will make a fresh start at the C.J.C. autumn meeting. Deman (J. Beck) recorded 52sec for the last half mile of his task. He is not an entrant for the first day of the autumn meeting at Riccarton, but will probably race on the second day.

' Mundus (N. Cowles) and I’m ; Alone (L. McGuire) did well to ; record 4Psec for their half mile. Mark Seven (A. J. Stokes) and Meteorologist YD. J. Thistoll) were paired over seven furlongs, and recorded 51 4-ssec for the last half mile. They will both have to be reckoned with in the hack distance races at Riccarton at Easter. Fast Mile Royal Warrant (R. Hobson), a fit horse for Easter racing, recorded Imin 43 4-ssec for his mile and 51 2-ssec for the last half mile.’ Track conditions will influence his Easter programme—whether he will race at Riccarton or Riverton. He has 8-0 in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton, and 8-7 in the Riverton Cup, in which the top weights, Good Abbot and Cheerio, have 9-5. The free-going Super Corn (N. C z owles) ran his mile in Imin 44 l-ssec. He slackened speed slightly towards the end after recording 51sec for the Afirst half mile. Dhofar (W. Beck) sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssec and appeared to do her work well. Riverwood (P. «[. Jones) and Gay Tommy (R. Hanlin) followed in 49 2-ssec, finishing on terms. Rio Maree (J. W. McDonald) followed in 50 l-ssec. Calcutta Sweep (W. Beck), a Great Autumn Handicap lightweight, completed his work by running half a mile in 52 2-ssec. He had two races at the Manawatu autumn meeting, and may have to be reckoned with against the stayers at Riccarton if the ground is firm. Teaka’s Tria! Teaka (A. J. Stokes) and Dart Away (N. Cowles) were paired over half a mile, run in 51 2-ssec. Teaka has thrived since the Wellington autumn meeting, where he was one of the best hack stayers. The stablemates, Nasib (N. Cowles) and Sweet Christine (A. J. Stokes) could have bettered their 52 2-ssec for half a mile. On the plough, Copenhagen (A. J. Stokes) and Desperado (N. Bonney) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec, the last three in 39 4-ssec.

Copenhagen became an early favourite for the Great Easter Handicap when he finished strongly into second place behind Motueka in the Amberley Cup.

Assembly (T. Wilson) started from the half mile, and dashed over the last three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. He should be at his best for Easter racing. Going Well Again Writer (L. McGuire) worked over seven furlongs in Imin 39 2-ssec, and recorded 42 4-ssec for the final three. A foreleg has given the Gold Nib gelding some trouble since he last raced, but all going well in the meantime he will race at Riccarton at Easter. He is the Great Autumn Handicap top weight with 9-0. Steadfast (R. Hanlin) sprinted his three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. He has not raced since the New

Zealand Cup meeting, but he is fairly well forward in preparation for another campaign. Bosky (R. Hanlin) and Brown Baron (J. W. McDonald) were companions in a run over four hurdles. Bosky ran down the first flight, but shaded his companion later.
