Country Women’s Institutes
Reports from nearly 30 women’s institutes and co-ordinating committees will be presented at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes, to be held at Scargill today. These reports shoxy that members have taken a particularly active part in welfare work and community life in their districts.
Since the last annual meeting an institute has been formed at Amberley.
Special reference is made In the annual report to the death of Mrs F. L. Topp, who died a few months ago. Mrs Topp received a gold honours badge at the last Dominion conference and was an assiduous worker for the movement. At the time of her death she was a voluntary organiser and secretary for the SeftonKowai institute.
She had held office as Dominion councillor, federation president and vice-president, and president and secretary of the North Canterbury co-ordinating committee. She had also been president of the Sefton-Kowai institute, the report said.
New for children are left-right foot-fit socks introduced by a London firm in the belief that ordinary socks may harm growing feet by pushing over the big toe. After seven years’ research and following medical and orthopaedic advice this firm has produced socks which, knitted throughout to shape, ensure that toes grow with no restrictions. In order to distinguish the left from the right foot, the big toe side of each sock is clearly outlined in scarlet thread.
