Mr G. M. Rodianov, Charge d’Affaires at the Soviet Legation in Wellington, called on the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) in the course of a visit to the city yesterday. Mr P. R. Gunasekara, High Commissioner for Ceylon in Australia, will visit Christchurch next month. The retirement of Mr F. Manderson from the position of editor of Parliamentary Debates and the appointment of Mr A. Sutherland to the position was announced yesterday by the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Sir Matthew Oram). Mr Manderson's retirement will take effect from July 31.—(PA.) Mr G. P. N. Watt, a director of Qantas and a former chairman of Trans-Australia Airlines and of the Australian National Airlines Commission, arrived in Christchurch yesterday by air for three weeks’ holiday in the South Island. Mr Watt, who is a former Secretary of the Australian Federal Treasury, will visit Queenstown and hopes to spend a few days at Mount Cook. Mr Y. Nara, head of the Euro-pean-American section, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tokyo, left by air for Sydney from Harewood yesterday. Mr Nara visited Auckland and Wellington and is now on his way to Japan.
Messrs G. C. Nicoll and N. Robilliard have been reappointed to represent the Canterbury Education Board on the Ashburton High School Board. The appointments are for a term of one year. Mr C. S. Ayers will be the board’s representative on the board of the Rangiora High School for the next two years and Mr G. R. Walters will be board representative on the Waimate High School board similar period.
