CHILLER BEEF COMPETITION
SOME ALTERATIONS IN CONDITIONS
Two alterations have been made in the conditions of this year’s Canterbury chiller-type beef competition, which will be held at the Addington saleyards and the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works at Belfast on April 11 and 12. The district exhibits selected for judging in London will this year be six carcases. In previous years 10 carcases' have been sent from each district, but with the growth of the number of competitions, the Meat Board has found 10 too many to handle with comfort. The Canterbury A. and P. Association, which conducts the local competition in collaboration with the Meat Board, has this year decided to confine entries to steers only. Some heifers of exceptional quality came forward for the two earlier competitions, but heifers have very little chance of winning prize money in the United Kingdom. Heifer beef is of course every bit as good as steer beef, but the extra waste on a heifer carcase makes the British buyer discounts its value, and in a competition judged strictly on commercial , merit, heifers are handicapped. •Judging on the hoof will take place at the Addington Saleyards on April 11 at 10 a.m. The hooks judging will be on the following dajy, when a field day will be held at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works.
