TRAFFIC CENSUS
< Marked Increase In Vehicles Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, 103.387 vehicles moved m and out of the area in which a traffic census was conducted by the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority. This figure represents an increase of 35 per cent, on the March, 1952, count, when 76,871 vehicles passed through the cordon. These figures were released by the Regional Planning Authority yesterday, after a preliminary count had been made. The area studied was that bounded roughly by the Avon river to the north and west, St. Asaph street to the south, and Barbadoes street to the east. Trade Vehicles Increase The number of trade vehicles which passed through the cordoned area was 24.271, as against 18,754 in 1952, an increase of 29.5 per cent. Oxford terrace, the busiest street in 1952, once again “topped the poll’’ this year. In the 12 hours 8573 vehicles entered and left the cordoned area, *as against 6542 in the former count, an increase of 31 per cent. The next busiest street was Victoria street, as it was in 1952. On Thursday 7944 vehicles passed through, an increase of 37| per cent, on the 1952 count of 5776.
