H.M.S. VANGUARD AS ROYAL ESCORT.—It was announced in London in September, 1955, that the Vanguard, the only British battleship in commission, would be placed in reserve in a few months. The above photograph of the Vanguard was tak en in May, 1954, while the gr eat battleship was escorting the Royal Yacht Britannia, in which the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh travelled on the last stage of their Commonwealth tour. The First Lord of the Admiralty announced recently that the Royal Navy’s battleships would probably be sold to friendly powers, and that they would be replaced by aircraftcarriers.
