Town Hall Appeal
Sir,—The Progress League and others are making an admirable appeal for support for the town hall. During the Royal visit, people were jammed in the streets, trying to get a glimpse of the Queen on the Clarendon balcony. Is the new town hall to be in a similar cramped position on the other side of the river? Or is the City Council going to use the site it already owns facing Latimer Square? Mr R. S. D. Harman published in your paper an inspiring idea for Christchurch town planning. It included a main road running north from the Railway Station, incorporating the frontage of a town hall, facing the wide open space of Latimer Square. Most of the oldest :nd loveliest cities in the world are centred on an open space or square, for which they have become famous. Christchurch could have one. The space is already there. So why be pushed into the river?—YoUrs etc., H. ELMSLIE. March 21, 1957.
