THE Board, in pursuance of the power conferred by "The Education Act, 1914,” and its Amendments, hereby directs that a PUBLIC MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS be held in each SCHOOL DISTRICT in the Canterbury Education District on MONDAY, APRIL 15, 1957, at half-past seven o’clock in the evening, for the Election of a School Committee for each District. Where the average daily roll number at the school or schools in the School District for the first four weeks of the third term of 1956 did not exceed one hundred children, the number of members of the School Committee to be elected at that meeting shall be five; where that roll number was over one hundred and not over two hundred, the number of members to be elected as aforesaid shall be seven; and where the roll number is over two hundred. the number of members to be elected as aforesaid shall be nine. The Place of Meeting shall be the School in each District, and this is understood to mean the Main School in any District which has more than one School, provided that if three days’ notice is given by the Committee in the public Press, the Meeting may be held in a more suitable building. The Board further directs that the First Meeting of each School Committee be held in the place appointed for the election, and immediately after the Election. The Board further calls upon the Householders in each District to SEND IN to the Chairman of the School Committee (or the Commissioner, as the case may be), in writing on or before MONDAY, APRIL 8, not later than 8 p.m., the NAMES of PERSONS being householders, NOMINATED by them to serve upon the Committee. Such nominations must be signed by the Proposer and by the Candidate, and must be in the form set forth in the Third Schedule to the Act, or to the effect thereof. In addition to such nomination, in School Districts in which the average attendance for the year 1956 did NOT exceed 240, any Householder present at the Meeting may nominate any Householder who consents by word of mouth or in writing to be nominated. (In the case of School Districts in which the average attendance for the year 1956 exceeded 240 the Act does NOT provide for the acceptance of verbal nominations.) “HOUSEHOLDER” in relation to the election of members of a School Committee means:— (a) Every adult male or female person who has for the period of three months next before the day of election resided in any dwell-ing-house within the School District as OWNER or TENANT thereof. (N.B. —Unless occupants of P.W.D. tents, huts, or hutments within the district have ’ children attending the school they have NO right to vote at the' School Committee Election); and (b) The father, wherever resident, or, if he is dead or absent from New Zealand, the guardian or other person, wherever resident, who has the actual custody of any child attending any public school situated within such District; and (c) In School Districts situated within the mining district under the Mining Act, 1908, includes every adult holder of a miner’s right who for a period of three months next before the day of election has resided in the School District and is not an alien; and (d) THE HUSBAND or WIFE of any person referred to in paragraphs (a), (b) or (c) hereof. ALL HOUSEHOLDERS, and no other persons, are qualified to vote at the Election and to be elected Members of the School Committee.
