OBITUARY

MR A. E. TALBOT

Mr Albert Edward Talbot, a well-known resident of Christchurch who had lived in the city all his life, died recently. He was 79.

He was educated at Cooke’s Private School (Warwick House) and later at Christ’s College, where he played in both the first eleven and the first fifteen.

In his younger days. Mr Talbot was a keen sportsman. He was a member of the Christchurch Football Club and the Opawa Swimming Club. Keenly interested in bowls, Mr Talbot was a foundation member, treasurer for 21 years, and a life member and past-president of the Opawa Bowling Club.

He was closely associated with the sport of wrestling for many years, being a foundation member of the Canterbury Wrestling Association and acting as its treasurer until two years ago. Mr Talbot was also a member of the Canterbury Boxing Association for many years.

With a partner, he controlled the Christchurcn agency of the Phoenix Assurance Company. Ltd., for a long period, later becoming the company’s Christchurch branch manager when it opened an office here. He held this position until his retirement in 1936.

Mr Talbot w’as a keen Mason and at the time of his death was the oldest living member of the Avon Lodge. Mr Talbot’s wife died in December. 1955. and he is survived by two sons, Messrs G. E. and R. O. Talbot, both of Dunedin, and three daughters. Mesdames W. S. Till (Wellington). P. W. Nicholls (Christchurch), and B. M. Nicholls (Motunau).

Mr Ernest Beresford Dawson, general manager of South African Associated Newspapers, and one of the leading journalistic figures in South Africa, died at Johannesburg today. He was 61. Mr Dawson was chairman of the South African section of the Commonwealth Press Union, an honorary life member of the South African Society of Journalists, a former president of the Newspaper Press Union, and a former chairman of the South African Press Association.
