RACING Fulgent Favourite For Waimate Cup

Fulgent, which indicated in his final trial at Riccarton yesterday morning that he had held his form well, is expected to test the best of his opponents in the Waimate Cup, principal event and first leg of the double, at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting tomorrow. Mrs C. C. McCarthy’s Red Mars gelding had raced most consistently for minor placings before winning the mile Kettle Memorial, in record time for the Greymouth track, at his last start, last Monday week. A bold galloper. Fulgent should not be troubled to run out a solid mile and a quarter on the Waimate track.

The top-weight, Spring Night, was a creditable second to Loyal Chief at Oamaru last Saturday, and as he was successful at his two previous attempts at Gore and Wingatui, his prospects in a field of this strength will have to be highly respected in spite of the 9-7 he has been assigned. Like Fulgent, Spring Night is also capable of taking up and keeping a handy position in the running, and although he will have to concede 171 b to the Riccarton gelding, he is still expected to offer Fudgent his strongest opposition. Surprise Winner Humber Hawk was a surprise winner of the sprint at Oamaru last Saturday. He was having his first start since his success in the mile and a quarter President’s Handicap on the same course in December. He should be improved by that race and should again race prominently. ' Exodus, the veteran of the field, is carrying his 10 years lightly, and although a great deal of improvement cannot be expected at this stage of his career, his most recent form has been most consistent and he may prove capable of causing a surprise. With the exception of Perfect Peach, whose form background is weak. * the remainder, which are all weighted at less than 8-0, have good recent form to their credit. Cashmere, was a creditable third behind Loyal Chief and Spring Night, but only had half a head in front of Roi Du Bois, at Oamaru last Saturday. Both are capable gallopers at their best and could prove troublesome to the more favoured division.

Eastern Star, a good winner in high-weight class last week, will find the class here stronger than those which opposed her at Oamaru, but nevertheless cannot be discounted on the strength of that performance. Frasco’s Chances

Although he is only one of four last start winners in the field Frasco, is likely to be a strong favourite for the second leg of the double, the Hook Hack Handicap. The Cassock three-year-old was not tested to outclass the hack sprinters at Oamaru last Saturday, but with some capable Speedsters among the newcomers in this field he will not find his task easy. He should still make a bold showing, however. Because of the higher minimum weight scale at Waimate he is required to carry 151 b more than he did at Oamaru.

The Orari trainer,- L. H. Pratt, will be represented by the two top-weights. Red Elf and Beau Revere. They were both decisive winners at Greymouth last Monday week, and they may be Frasco’s strongest opponents. Although well beaten by Frasco at Oamaru, Helm made an encouraging fresh start and battled on gamely for second. He will be improved by that race, and the 51b better terms on which he will meet Frasco tomorrow, could possibly be a deciding factor in reversing the positions. Riccarton Entries

Gay Tommy and Winning Treasure are the only Riccarton representatives in the field, and both should race prominently. Gay Tommy, which was a dual winner in maiden events at Washdyke in December, has made a good recovery from the injury which caused him to be scratched at Wingatui last month. He worked well at Riccarton yesterday, and although lack of racing may tell against him, a forward showing would not come as a surprise.

Winning Treasure fought on well after sharing the pace, to win the Trial Stakes at Oamaru last Saturday. The opposition here will

be stronger but she could again take part in the finish. Wealthy, last raced almost two years ago and Yue Chee won his way out of maiden class over a year ago. Of the remaining six runners, excepting Dellar, all have won one race in the novice class this season, but they do not appeal as strongly as those nearer the top of the handicap.
