APARTHEID IN CHURCHES
Presbyterians Urge
Defiance
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, March 20.
The Cape Town Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church, in a statement read in all its churches, said that if the South African Native Laws Amendment Bill were passed in its present form it would be a solemn duty to disregard it, says the Cape Town correspondent of “The Times.”
In its present form—the Minister of Native Affairs has said it is under revision—the bill would make the permission of the Minister necessary for the attendance of Africans at churches with a predominantly “white” congregation in “white” urban areas.
The Presbyterian statement said: “We have always insisted that the doors of all our churches are open to all, irrespective of race. . . .
This Presbytery declares itself unable to acknowledge or accept the right of any temporal authority to say who may or may not worship in our churches.”
The Anglican Church has already expressed defiance of the bill.
