LONDON, March 21.

The United Nations SecretaryGeneral, Mr Hammarskjold, arrived by air in Cairo early today. the British United Press reported from Cairo.

He would have talks with Egyptian leaders on the problems of the future of the Suez Canal, the Gaza Strip, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the insulation of the ArabIsraeli truce Aines, the agency said.

He was expected to stay in Egypt for four or five days. He might then fly to Israel Mr Hammarskjold has appointments today with President Nasser and the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi. Mr Hammarskjold will discuss the canal situation and the Gaza Strip with Dr. Fawzi this morning and will see President Nasser tonight. The Secretary-General also has appointments with the United Nations emergency force commander, Major-General E. L, M. Burns, and Yhe United Nations canal salvage chief, LieutenantGeneral Raymond Wheeler. Earlier today. General Wheeler told Mr Hammarskjold that the canal would be completely cleared for maximum draught ships by April 10. Mrs Meir Returns

Another New York* message reports that the Israeli Foreign Minister. Mrs Golda Meir, flew home to-night to report on her talks with the United States Secretary of State, Mr Dulles, on the conflict betwen Israel and Egypt. Mrs Meir told reporters at the airport that she had discovered an identity of objectives between the United States and Israel on the issues of freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Aqaba and the Suez Canal. Mrs Meir said that the two countries also had similar objectives in solving the dispute over the Gaza Strip. “The Israel Government has made certain suggestions for implementation of our joint objectives in the Middle East,” she said. “We know that these suggestions are being seriously considered by the United States State Department, and our Ambassador and his colleagues will be in further consultation.”
