High Prices At Final Ewe Fair Of Season

The 1957 ewe fair season in North and Mid-Canterbury closed at Coalgate yesterday with another excellent sale for all classes of ewes. Again the emphasis was on the older ewes and for a limited selection there was a keen demand at very high rates. Prices for these were fully firm to a shade better than best fair rates for comparable sheep. Five-year-old ewes sold up to 82s, the highest price paid at any fair this season, apart from Little River, where there was a single sale at 90s. This was for Romneys. Fine wools realised up to 70s and the bulk of the offering of this age group found ready buyers at more than 60s. The market for four-year-olds was particularly strong, with the best of the Romneys ranging from 81s to 87s and the others selling at 62s to 70s, with a small selection of fine wools in sales at 68s to 73s 6d. The two-tooth market was about firm for a small selection of only 17 pens. Romneys realised up to £5 8s and fine wools to £5 2s 6d. More than 1000 lambs. sold freely with ewe lambs bringing up to 84s and wether lambs to 60s 6d. There was also a buoyant market for an entry of two-tooth wethers at values between 70s to 795.

The entry this year totalled 8157 head, compared with 7465 last year, and it included 1184 twb-tooth ewes, 4515 older ewes, 1077 lambs and 1381 wethers. Again there was a large gallery of farmers following the sale and a number had to leave the saleyards with their requirements unfilled. The two-tooth market was topped by A. J. Scott (Kirkstyle) with a pen of 76 Romneys at £5 Bs. This was just 44s ahead of the top price paid to Mr Scott last year. For a small pen I. H. Gillanders (Greendale) received £5 5s and halfbreds from L. Searle (Hororata) reached to £5 2s 6d. Seventy-four Romney cross from C. Cholmondeley (Longford) brought £5, and 99s was paid for 101 Corriedales from R. F. White (Silverwood). High Prices

A splendid pen of big heavilywoolled sheep from J. A. Parsons (Oranga) easily headed the four-year-old age group with a sale at 87s and 252 Romney cross from G. B. Starky (Steventon) made from 77s to 81s. Corriedales from E. H. Sime (Grasslands) brought from 73s to 73s 6d. Last year Mr Sime topped the four-year-old market with a sale from 41s to 425. Mr Parsons’s sheep also set the second highest price for the season in the five-year-old class. A pen of 74 realised 82s. The next best price was 70s for the tops of 116 Corriedales also from E. H. Sime.

Pens of four and five-year-old ewes ranged up to 82s for an entry from Wills and Le Cren (Snowdon), who also sold ewe lambs at 84s, the top price of the lamb sale.
