UNIVERSITY PAY IN BRITAIN
Increases Announced (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, March 14. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Peter Thorneycroft) announced in the Commons that an additional grant totalling £3 million would be made to enable universities throughout Britain to increase the salaries of academic staffs. He was satisfied a revision of salaries was necessary if the standard of recruitment was to be maintained during the forthcoming period of university expansion. The increases are: professors £2300 to £3OOO (formerly £l9OO to £2850); readers and senior lecturers up to £2250 (formerly £1250 to £1850); lecturers £9OO to £1650 (formerly up to £1350); assistant lecturers, £7OO to £B5O (formerly £550 to £650). Teachers in medical faculties outside . hospitals: Professors, £2300 to £3OOO (formerly £2250 to £2850); readers £1650 to £2250 (formerly £1450 to £2050); lecturers £9OO to £2250 (formerly £7OO to £1750). Clinical posts: Professors £2500 to £3100: readers £1750 to £2550 (formerly £1750 to £2400); lecturers £9OO to £2550 (formerly £7OO to £1750).
