The women’s group of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society held its annual meeting at Elizabeth House yesterday. Officers elected were: chairman, Mrs J. H. Powell; deputy-chairman, Mrs J. D. Arthur; secretary, Mrs H. E. Goggin; treasurer, Mrs L. C. Spooner; committee, Mesdames J. R. Webster, R. Drayton. T. A. Black. J. Excell, A. McNeill, H. S. Fraer, J. R. Greenfield and Miss Jean McKenzie. Two humorous recitations were given by Mrs J. R. Greenfield. When the Christchurch Soroptimists’ Club met yesterday a cheque for £2lO, the proceeds from a wishing-well, was handed to Mrs H. Wales for the North. Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society for its work among Hungarian refugees in Christchurch.
Miss A. M. Burns, formerly a eacher at Christchurch Girls’ High School, has accepted a relieving position at Linwood High School for the remainder of the first term. Miss F. K. Hairrison, who has been a charge sister at St. George’s Hospital for about eight years, will leave New Zealand on Saturday for a tour of Britain and Europe. She will be accompanied by Miss N. McClurg, matron of Noradene Hospital, New Plymouth, and formerly of Christchurch. Both Miss Harrison and Miss McClurg, who is now visiting Christchurch, have been guests of honour at several parties held by friends in the nursing profession.
Mrs Nellie Keith, one of the first white women born in Alexandra, recently celebrated her ninetyfourth birthday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Alice Glossop, Ashburton. Married at the age of 18 to Mr Alexander Keith, she lived at Clyde, where her husband was a surveyor for the Vincent County Council, for 25 years. Mrs Keith spent all her life in various parts of Otago before going to live in Ashburton three years ago.
Miss Dawn Ballantyne, who recently returned from a four years’ visit to Britain and Europe studying ballet, was guest of honour at a reception held recently by Miss Bessie Macdonald. Miss Ballantyne gave a talk on her experiences while touring Europe with ballet companies. Items were given by Mesdames Madge Waterson and Loma Gobbe. Mrs Waterson was the accompanist.
Wives of delegates attending the annual conference of the New Zealand War Amputees’ Association, which will open in Christchurch on March 19. will be entertained by wives of members of the Canterbury-Westland association. On the evening of March 19 Canterbury members and their wives will hold a social reunion in the National Club’s lounge. Next morning wives of the visitors will be shown over a Christchurch factory. On March 21 delegates and their wives will be the guests of Mr W. Deans, of Darfield, a member of the association. for afternoon tea. On arrival in Christchurch the women visitors will be presented with posies of flowers. A programme arranged by Mrs Jean Scrimshaw was presented at a recent meeting of the Pensioners’ Association. A humorous play, produced by Mrs Treland, was presented. Those taking part were Mesdames Treland. Boryman, Kennedy, Lester and Weir. Items were also given by Miss Josephine Foley (harmonica solos). Mrs Duncan Stewart, and Mrs J. Scrimshaw. The accompanist was Mrs Holda. Overseas League morning tea party arranged for March 13 has been cancelled. —Advt
