N.Z. COUNTIES’ CONFERENCE

CRITICISM OF METHODS Several delegates to the annual meeting of Ward 11 of the New Zealand Counties Association in Christchurch yesterday said they were concerned at the conduct of the annual conference of the association in recent years. After Mr W. R. Oliver, of the Selwyn County, said that he felt insufficient time was given to the discussion of remits, Mr J. E. Horrell (Eyre County) said that he was concerned with the general lack of knowledge that representatives had of the remits that they brought forward. Remits were often badly explained, and then passed without discussion, said Mr Horrell. He suggested that the conference be divided into committees to consider remits which then would come back to the conference. The chairman (Mr W. F. McArthur, Paparua) said that wards had been designed to do this committtee work, but remits did not get “vetted” as they had been at this meeting. He had noted the matters discussed and would press the matter at the meeting of the executive committee, he said.
