TRANSPORT IN SUBURBS

BOARDS PROPOSALS TO COUNTIES The Christchurch Transport Board's recommended requirements for urban planning were conveyed to the Halswell and Heathcote County Councils yesterday. Any proposed subdivisions of land, either for industrial or residential purposes, should have full regard to transport requirements, with particular reference to adequate turning points, the board stated. In laying out roads along which bus traffic would operate, the roads should be constructed so that they would be suitable for carrying heavy commercial vehicles and passenger buses. Road planning should be such that there was a good access to the bus route, either by side roads or walk ways. The design of the road layout should be such that the main road in a subdivision should pass through the centre of a residential settlement, and that all subsidiary roads should be made to loop on to it so as to prevent uneconomic mileage being run by bus operators providing the service. the board concluded.
