Conference This Week The biennial conference of the Federation of Women’s Clubs in New Zealand will open in Christchurch on Wednesday morning when two delegates from each of the 38 affiliated clubs will be welcomed by Mrs W. D. Bunt, president of the Canterbury Women’s Club.
The clubs have a combined membership of more than 5000. The president of the federation is Mrs H. T. Stubberfield, of Christchurch.
The conference will be held over two days, when matters of mutual interest to the clubs will be discussed. The programme for Wednesday includes a buffet luncheon and a social function in the evening. On Thursday the delegates will be taken on a drive around Christchurch. The federation was formed in March, 1925, when Miss Amy Kane called a meeting of representatives from all the clubs. One of the aims is to foster the fine arts. The Canterbury Women’s Club, which has a membership of 340. was founded in 1913. Three of the foundation members, Misses Mabel Smith, M. B. Lovell-Smith, and M. F. Lockwood, are still members. The activities of the club include art, drama, music, gardening, and bridge. At present the members are raising funds to buy their own building. The club is affiliated to clubs in England, the United States, Africa and Australia.
