SWIMMING First Country Title Meeting At Kaiapoi

The first Canterbury country swimming championships—a fixture which will be held annually —were held in the Kaiapoi baths on Saturday afternoon and evening. Before a very large crowd of spectators, more than 150 swimmers from country districts competed in more than 60 events.

Organised by the Kaiapoi Swimming Club, the championship meeting was conducted in excellent fashion, and the events were swum off with the minimum of delay. The Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr N. E. Kirk) opened the meeting. He congratulated the officials who organsied the programme, and paid tribute to the work which swimming clubs were doing in country areas.

One of the outstanding competitors was R. Hatchwell, of Kaiapoi, the New Zealand 100 yards freestyle title-holder in 1939, 1946, and 1947. Another senior competitor, D. Cameron, of Ashburton, swam particularly well, beating Hatch well in both the 50

yards and 220 yards freestyle events.

The women’s events were dominated by Mrs A. Tourell, secretary of the ‘Kaiapoi Swimming Club. A competitor at the Canterbury championship meeting two months ago. Mrs Tourell gained valuable points for her club towards the Farrant Cup. A strong and versatile young swimmer, R. Naish, of Kaiapoi, gave an excellent display to win the junior 25 yards and 50 yards freestyle events, as well as the 25 yards backstroke.

The meeting was held under special permission from the Canterbury and Ashburton Swimming Centres. Under the rules of both centres no clubs which are unaffiliated may compete officially with affiliated clubs. Permission was granted because plans are now in hand for the formation of a North Canterbury sub-centre of the Canterbury centre.
