Warning On U.S. Aid To Poland
(Rec 12.15 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 10. Senator William Knowland (Republican, California) said yesterday that if the Eisenhower Administration gave economic aid to Poland it might pave the way for a “Communist Marshall Plan” ** which could cost the United States 1000 m dollars a year* Senator Knowland, the Senate Republican leader, told reporters that he had* put President Eisenhower and the Secretary of State. Mr Dulles, on notice that there would be considerable opposition in Congress to any economic assistance for any other country occupied by Soviet troops. Senator Knowland said: “If we start giving help to Poland it would be difficult to discriminate against Rumania, Bulgaria. Czechoslovakia and Hungary.” A Polish delegation is now negotiating with State Department officials for grants and loans.
