Further Rise In Ewe Values At Methven

Boisterous weather it rained all the morning—and ankle-deep slush did not detract from the keen interest of the large following of buyers at the Methven ewe fair yesterday. Values for four-year-olds and five-year-olds were at .their highest point this season, and twotooths also commanded excellent values. . Two-tooths sold freely up to £6 2s 6d, and four-year-olds made up to 95s and five-year-olds to 795. A total clearance was effected of all sheep offered. Although Romneys predominated in the yarding there was a good representation of fine-woolled breeds, and these, too, met a rising market. The entry totalled 17,275 head, comprising 5274 twotooths and 12,001 older ewes. Last year the entry totalled 19,927 head, including 13.076 older ewes and 6851 two-tooths. An indication of the strength of the market for four-year-old ewes can be gained from the fact that of 16 pens only one was sold at under 60s, whilst six realised 70s or more and three 80s or more. Ten sales of five-year-olds were made at 60s or better and in the two-tooth section there were 28 sales at £5 or more. Values of older ewes could be quoted at least 5s ahead of recent prices. Top Two-tooth Prices Top price for two-tooth ewes was paid early in the sale. It\ was £6 2s 6d given for 152 Romneys from A. F. and J. D. Marr (Mount Hutt). Two other sales were made at £6. They were on account of J. G. Lilley and Son (Lyndhurst) for 80 Romneys and D. S. Harrison (Drayton) for 60 Romneys. For a pen of 50 A. J. McLauchlan and Son (Rivdrbank) was paid £5 17s and for- 60 W. G. and D. M. Maw (Mount Hutt) received £5 16s. Top price for Corriedales was 91s for 64 from R. H. Ensor (Glenariffe).

A consignment of 119 Romneys from the Lands and Survey Department (Rosehill) headed the four-year-old market with an excellent sale at 955. Another cut of the same sheep—there were 216 in the selection—realised 925. The estate of L. L. Richards (Mount Hutt) also sold 475 for 85s. Three hundred Corriedales from R. H. Ensor realised 80s and halfbreds from Logan Bros. (Windwhistle) and Corriedales from D. L. Ensor (Glenrock) made 765. Five-year-old ewes sold up to 79s for a selection of 289 from the Richards estate. Romney cross from H. R. Huddlestone (Mount Hutt) realised 71s. A pen of threequarterbreds from C. Cooper (Fighting Hill) realised 68s and the same price was paid for 217 halfbred from T. H. Evans (Windwhistle). ’ The following is a range of values with figures for last year given for comparison:
