TROTTING Dignus For Sprint At Washdyke Today

The speedy three-year-old, Dignus, is selected to win the WaiIti Handicap, the sprint race at the Timaru Trotting Club’s autumn meeting at Washdyke today. Dingus looked a very fit horse when paraded at the New Brighton trials last Monday. He was not knocked about in that race, being eased right down in the straight. The run is certain to have improved him, and off the front he looks to have great prospects of extending his already fine record for the season. Kyle Nurse and Kerrystar will form a strong bracket for their Chertsey trainer, J. L. Behrns. Kyle Nurse has raced most consistently this season, and - she has not yet come to the end of her winning run. Kerrystar has not been so successful, but at times he has shown plenty of ability. If he races up to his best, he could make a bold showing. Johnny Hall was a most impressive winner over one mile and a quarter at Hutt Park a week ago. He looks favourably placed on the front, and it’ will be most surprising if he is not prominent. A five-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall from Frank’s Pride, he looks to have a bright future. He will be bracketed with Master Tony, a winner at New Brighton last month, his most recent start.

Golden Chimes, winner of the Geraldine Cup, Air Command, and Green Label, are others expected to race well, but they should be safely held by Dignus, Kyle Nurse and Johnny Hall. Two three-year-olds, Estelle and Superway, are expected to dispute the finish of the Claremont Handicap. Estelle was runner-up to Alight at her only start at a totalisator meeting. Smart Filly Superway, a sister to Supervise, is another promising young trotter. She has been placed in four of her last five starts, and is overdue for a win. She showed to advantage at the New Brighton trials. Kauranui, third to Alight and Estelle at Orari, may be returning to form, and on the strength of that placing he is entitled to respect. Wellburn, which raced well at the New Brighton trials, Home Mail and Simplicity are selected to do best of the remainder.

Fourth Edition, runner-up to Sebastian at Motukarara last Saturday, should gain an overdue win in the Salisbury Handicap. The Fourth Brigade gelding has shown plenty of ability in his racing so far, and he will only need to reproduce his effort of last week to win. Stellar has been off the scene since December 31. The Springbok filly had some sound efforts in strong classic company. Auditor was an impressive maiden graduate at Motukarara last week. The half-brother to Starbeam has a big reputation, and has now struck form. Disraeli, which raced well at Hutt Park, Catamaran, and Rey Derby make most appeal of the others. ♦ The Cup The bracket of Lookaway and Loyal Cis is expected to dominate betting on the Timaru Cup, the first leg of the double. Lookaway, one of the outstanding three-year-olds of the season, is expected to be the better. Most opposition to him may come from Stylish George, Showdown, Brandon, and Scottish Fair. Egyptian Queen is expected to be a firm favourite for the second leg, the Washdyke Handicap. The hardest foi’ her to beat may be Globetrotter, Wainoni Loyal, Battle Fling, Spaxton, Auburn’s Best and Marcina. There has been some rain in Timaru this week, but it has not affected the track, which should be in splendid order. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—Claremont Handicap: Estelle, Super Way, Kauranui. 11.40 a.m.—Salisbury Handicap: Fourth Edition, Stellar, Auditor. 12.25 p.m.—Timaru Cup: Lookaway, Stylish George.
