RACING DOUBLE TODAY AT TRENTHAM

Wingatui Stablemates Strong Contenders

The Wingatui-trained Field Chief and Ma Heine as ill have solid backing for their attempt to win the totalisator double at Trentham today the first day <>f the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, for their Christchurch owner, Mr D. McFarlane ‘

f ield Chief is top weight in the £5OOO Autumn Handicap, the last two-mile race of the season for the leading stayers. Ma Reine has 8-12 in the Thompson Handicap, a race won last vear by her stablemate, Mighty Dollar.

Field Chief and Ma Reine won the totalisator double at the Ranks Peninsula meeting last Saturday. They were in much weaker fields at Motukarara, but their performances showed their fitness, and their earlier records have left no doubts about their class in strong company at Trentham.

Sombrero, the Wellington Cup winner this season. Writer, a confident Gold Nib gelding from Riccarton. and Salhia, a good fourth in the Wellington Cup and a Manawatu Cup winner, will probably be Field Chief’s strongest opponents.

Stanford Hope dropped out of the Thompson Handicap field yesterday, but there will be a big field for the rich mile race. Ma Reine is third in the handicap below Pinnacle Ridge, the runnerup in this race last year, and Royal Zorra, a winner over seven furlongs at the Wellington Cup meeting.

The field is strong in form torses, right down to the bottom of the handicap. Next in favour to Ma Reine are Hot Drop and India, two winners at the Wellington Gup meeting. Hot Drop, a five-year-old gelded son of Faux Tirage and Sweet Spray, was considered an unlucky third over six furlongs at Masterton last Saturday. Three starts ago he dead-heated with Zarib in the Wellington Racing Club's January Handicap. India’s Prospect

India, a four-year-old Khorassan gelding, has made steady improvement with racing. He has winning form up to a mile and a quarter, and showed that a mile was one of his best distances when he won the Douro Handicap under 9-5 at the Wellington Cup meeting.

Royal Pepeta was scratched yesterday for the Railway Handicap, for which Moon Crest is the early favourite, with Lochie, Barobar, and Belle Time also in favour. Passive Doubtful

Passive's trainer, F. Smith, said yesterday that a start for the Ruthless filly in the North Island Challenge Stakes was still not certain. A decision will not be made until the owner, Mr J. A. Mitchell, arrives at Trentham today.

Since the scratching of El Khobar, Somerset Fair has firmed strongly in favour for the Stakes, though he may be put to the test over this distance by Coleridge, winner of this race as a three-year-old last year. The weather was fine in Wellington yesterday and the track was hard and fast, but there was a possibility of overnight rain.
