Holger Nielsen Resuscitation
Members of the public in 1 Christchurch will again have the - opportunity of learning the Holger I Nielsen method of resuscitation ■ this month. A second course conJ ducted by the Canterbury branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society will begin in the Latimer Hall on Monday, March 18. Organised as part of the local effort towards the national water safety campaign, the course will cater for persons over 16. Twentyfour instructors will be present . at the hall to teach the resuscita- .' tion lessons. At the end of the 1955-56 swim- • ming season, the Canterbury ’ branch of the society issued a record number of resuscitation j awards, but this season that figure - was exceeded as early as Decem- - ber. The response from persons wisht ing to learn Holger Nielsen has exceeded all expectations, and the
branch has had to refuse numer- a ous invitations to visit small s groups to give instruction. Instead 1 it has been found necessary to t book a large hall and invite the s public to attend. At a later date the branch hopes < to instruct all members of the > committees of local swimming j clubs. Of the 15 swimming clubs ; • in Christchurch, 13 operate ‘at ] I school baths in the suburban areas. ( • In this way the Holger Nielsen ] t method will be passed on to ; ■ youngsters learning to swim. , Plans are also in hand for instruc- • tion to be given to members of r rowing and yachting clubs. i Instruction, however, has not i been confined to swimmers. The j staff of a Christchurch motor gar- - age has requested (and will receive) instruction later in the year. - and air hostesses of the National s Airways Corporation will receive ? instruction next week.
